Minimalism started out as a style in architecture but its concept was quickly repurposed to music by La Monte Young, Steve Reich, Terry Riley, and Philip Glass. Based on repetition with a slow rate of change, minimalism mirrors the evolutionary process itself, allowing for blissful introspection. The etudes by Glass, in his own words, aim to "explore a variety of tempi, textures, and piano techniques" as they keep the pianist busy, and in shape.
